A Triumph of Regional Unity: Trans-Boundary Cooperation Boosts Mountain Gorilla Population

Through outstanding collaboration between Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC, the mountain gorilla population has surged, showcasing conservation leadership.

In a monumental victory for African environmental stewardship, the mountain gorilla population across Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo has risen to 1,063—up from a mere 300 in 1990. This historic milestone is the direct result of cross-border collaboration and dedicated local conservation efforts by African wildlife authorities.

By working together beyond national borders, these nations have transformed a dire ecological challenge into a beacon of hope. This triumph not only safeguards Africa’s unique biodiversity but also drives sustainable ecotourism, empowering local communities and proving that African-led solutions are highly effective in managing the continent's precious natural resources.
